Magic Editor: Google’s AI Photo Editing Tool
Google's Magic Editor is its latest generative AI photo editing tool, debuting with the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. While these features are typically available only to new Pixel phones for the first six months after release, Google has chosen to extend access to earlier Pixel models as well.
Additionally, any Google Photos user on an eligible Android or iOS device can use Magic Editor for free, although they can save up to 10 edited photos per month. Pixel phone users or subscribers to Google’s paid services enjoy unlimited access.
Earlier features, such as Photo Unblur and Magic Eraser, will also be made available for free to all Google Photos users. Google has provided a comprehensive list of the tool's functionalities on its Photos community site, which includes practical features like portrait mode blur editing. However, some generative AI features introduced alongside the Pixel 8 series, such as Best Take and Audio Magic Eraser, will remain exclusive to the latest Pixel smartphones.
Users wishing to utilize Magic Editor must ensure their devices meet the minimum requirements: a 64-bit chip, 4GB of RAM, and operate on iOS 15 or Android 8.0. These specifications are relatively lenient since most AI processing is handled in the cloud. Therefore, if you are still using an iPhone 5, the inability to access Magic Editor may not be your primary concern.
