iOS 18 Leak: Major AI Reforms Coming to Safari and Siri

Recent news about iOS 18 highlights its anticipated significant advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). Reports indicate that the initial AI features in iOS 18 will be developed in-house by Apple and will run locally on iPhones, eliminating reliance on third-party services.

Leaked information suggests that Apple’s AI initiatives will enhance several key applications, including Safari, Spotlight Search, Siri, Mail, and Messages. The goal of these AI upgrades is to improve user experience while maintaining a strong focus on privacy. One of the standout features will be the ability to quickly generate complete sentence responses, powered by a language model known as "Ajax." This model will rapidly analyze text inputs and provide multiple responses ranked by accuracy and relevance.

The Ajax language model's swift text analysis capabilities will enable features like text summarization in applications such as Safari and Messages. The upcoming Safari 18 update is expected to introduce a "Smart Search" function, allowing users to generate concise summaries of web pages with ease. By deeply integrating its AI model across applications, Apple aims to extract contextual information from contacts and calendars, significantly enhancing the Siri user experience.

However, it’s important to note that complex tasks, such as creative text generation and intricate responses, may still require cloud processing. Apple is considering collaborations with OpenAI and Google to bolster the AI capabilities of the iPhone. Nevertheless, Apple remains committed to optimizing its AI models to reduce reliance on cloud computing, further underscoring its dedication to protecting user privacy.

Apple is expected to officially unveil these AI features at this year’s WWDC event later in the year.
