As technology continues to advance, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a hot topic worldwide. Apple is keeping pace with this trend by prioritizing AI in its software updates. The 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will kick off on June 10 at 10 AM Eastern Time (10 PM Beijing Time). During this event, Apple is expected to unveil key details about major software updates, including iOS and iPadOS 18, visionOS 2, watchOS 11, and macOS.
AI will drive many new features in these upcoming systems, particularly in iOS 18, which aims to enhance user experience significantly. Siri, Apple's intelligent voice assistant, will receive notable upgrades, enabling more natural and intelligent conversations through deeper integration with various applications. iPhone users may also gain access to ChatGPT throughout the system, leveraging its language processing capabilities for more complex tasks.
Additional features in iOS 18 will include the ability to create custom emojis based on descriptions, command-driven photo editing, audio transcription, and intelligent content summarization—all designed to boost productivity. Developers will benefit from enhanced coding capabilities in Xcode, and new opportunities for innovation in health and fitness coaching.
Beyond AI enhancements, iOS 18 will also offer improved customization options for the home screen, allowing users to freely arrange icons and widgets and change app icon colors for a personalized look. The Messages app will, for the first time, support RCS, enhancing communication between iPhone and Android users. iMessage will introduce rich text effects and animations, making conversations more dynamic.
Several of Apple’s core applications, including Photos, Mail, and Notes, will receive updates to improve functionality. Additionally, the Control Center’s "Now Playing" and "Home" widgets will be redesigned for more convenient music and smart home device control.
As a significant update for the Apple Vision Pro, visionOS 2 will introduce more applications, improve app arrangements on the home screen, and feature powerful real-time captioning to enhance user experience. The international release date for Vision Pro devices is also expected to be announced, encouraging developers to create more visionOS applications.
macOS is anticipated to showcase additional AI features, utilizing the neural engine technology in M-series chips to further enhance user experience. The System Settings application will be updated to streamline user operations.
iPadOS 18 will introduce a calculator app with many features that sync with iOS 18. It will also enhance accessibility by allowing users to control their iPads through eye-tracking.
In terms of Apple Watch, updates for watchOS 11 will be relatively minor, likely focusing on core feature enhancements, such as new watch faces and workout types. As for Apple TV, updates for tvOS 18 may not be as significant, but there will likely be improvements in continuity, particularly in integrating with the iPhone and Vision Pro.
WWDC 2024 promises a wealth of new features and upgraded experiences, especially around artificial intelligence. However, unlike previous years, this conference will focus more on software rather than hardware releases, which may disappoint consumers hoping for new devices. Nevertheless, it remains an event that shouldn’t be missed.
