MassRobotics Unveils New Accelerator Program to Propel Robotics Innovation

Nestled among the warehouses of the South Boston Waterfront, MassRobotics is not only an incubator but also an import hub for the city’s burgeoning robotics community. Excitingly, it is soon to launch the MassRobotics Accelerator, enhancing its support for startups in this dynamic field. This morning, the nonprofit announced that applications for the new program are officially open.

The 13-week MassRobotics Accelerator is tailored for early-stage robotics startups, particularly those focused on hardware, components, and applications. Selected companies will receive $100,000 in non-dilutive funding, provided by MassTech, an organization dedicated to advancing technology across the state.

This inaugural round will feature ten companies, with MassRobotics emphasizing that it will not take an equity stake in any of the selected startups. "We believe it's the first equity-free robotics accelerator in the U.S.," shares Marita McGinn, the accelerator’s director.

Participants will benefit from access to MassRobotics’ well-equipped facilities, featuring CNC machines, laser cutters, waterjet cutters, and 3D printers for hardware development. In addition, the site hosts Industrial Automation and Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) laboratories, alongside various robotic hardware platforms. Experts will also be on hand to provide mentorship in both technical and business matters.

The application period began on October 16 and will remain open until the end of November. The four-month accelerator program starts on February 5, culminating in a demo day on May 2, coinciding with Boston’s Robotics Summit & Expo.

While there’s a “strong preference” for companies based in Massachusetts, McGinn notes there aren’t specific quotas in place.

"We're seeking the most compelling companies," she explains. "One of our main goals with MassTech is to draw more businesses to Massachusetts. Ultimately, we anticipate a diverse mix of local companies and those from other parts of the U.S. or even international jurisdictions. For companies based outside Massachusetts, we require a commitment to establish a presence in the state for at least one year post-accelerator."

McGinn also emphasizes the importance of diversity, a critical yet often overlooked aspect of the industry. “We are committed to ensuring our cohort reflects diversity from every angle.”
