OpenAI Partners with News Corp: Utilizing Premium News Content to Enhance ChatGPT Training

OpenAI recently announced a multi-year collaboration with News Corp, which owns prominent publications such as The Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch, and The Sun. Under this agreement, OpenAI will gain access to both current and archived content from News Corp to further train its AI model, ChatGPT.

This partnership signifies a new phase in the relationship between the news industry and artificial intelligence companies. News Corp CEO Robert Thomson emphasized that the agreement highlights the value of quality journalism, noting that many media companies face technological challenges in the digital age and must seize this opportunity.

Since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, generative AI technology has gained widespread attention. The quality of responses generated by the chatbot directly depends on the quality of the training data. Traditionally, AI companies have trained their models using publicly available online data without obtaining consent from content creators. Now, these companies are actively seeking financial partnerships with the news industry to ensure their models are trained on up-to-date and authoritative information.

In recent months, OpenAI has signed similar agreements with various news organizations, including Reddit, the Financial Times, the Associated Press, and German publisher Axel Springer. Last month, News Corp also entered into a multi-million dollar agreement with Google aimed at training its AI models.

Meanwhile, other tech companies are looking to establish similar collaborations with news publishers. Business Insider recently launched its own AI chatbot on social media and plans to partner with news organizations for additional training data.

For the struggling news industry, funding from AI companies is becoming an increasingly important revenue source. However, not all publishers are welcoming this trend. The New York Times has sued OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging improper use of its content for AI training. The BBC and other media outlets have also blocked OpenAI from scraping their website content.

Despite these concerns, the collaboration between OpenAI and News Corp is viewed as a significant breakthrough in the industry. It not only provides valuable data resources for OpenAI but also creates new revenue streams for News Corp, enhancing its influence in the digital age. As AI technology continues to evolve, this collaboration model may represent a new trend in partnerships between the news industry and tech companies.
