In recent years, Nothing has demonstrated its ability to produce compelling smartphones at competitive prices. Today, the company provided an intriguing glimpse of the upcoming Nothing Phone 3, which—if it aligns with Nothing's vision—could emerge as one of the most exciting smartphones of next year. On X (formerly Twitter), CEO Carl Pei shared a five-minute video addressing the recent surge of AI in consumer technology and, more importantly, how Nothing envisions integrating AI into its products. In summary, the Nothing Phone 3 has the potential to completely transform how we interact with our smartphones.
A key innovation is the “hub”—an AI-driven approach to the smartphone home screen. At the top, users will find quick access buttons for essentials like weather, social media, calendars, and messages. Below this is an assortment of “dynamic and context-aware” widgets. For instance, the hub could automatically display a QR code for boarding passes or concert tickets based on your calendar events. Nothing aims to transition the home screen from merely serving as a launcher for apps to becoming a “hub of contextual, relevant information.”
Additionally, Nothing is developing a proprietary AI voice assistant. This assistant is designed to evolve into a personalized “companion” for each user. It could appear on the home screen, lock screen, or even through the unique Glyph lights on future Nothing Phones.
While these AI features have been in development for only two months, Pei confirms that they will begin rolling out with the Nothing Phone 3 in 2025. Although it's uncertain if all the functionalities discussed will materialize as described, Nothing clearly has high aspirations. In a follow-up email, the company stated that “the Phone (3), launching next year, [marks] a milestone in Nothing’s consumer AI journey, featuring both software and hardware advancements.”
Having encountered overhyped AI claims with devices like the Rabbit R1, I’m genuinely intrigued by Nothing’s push into AI. Historically, dedicated AI devices have struggled to gain traction, as seen with products like the Rabbit R1 and Humane AI Pin. The potential for AI on smartphones, however, remains substantial; yet many existing smartphone AI functionalities focus primarily on photo editing and language translation. While useful, these capabilities fall short of the transformative AI revolution we've been awaiting.
Nothing’s ambitious vision is refreshing, although it may not come together exactly as intended. Nevertheless, it sounds significantly more innovative than the current state of AI features in smartphones, generating considerable excitement. It is certainly frustrating that we’ll need to wait until 2025 to witness the final product, but I remain hopeful that the Nothing Phone 3 will make the wait worthwhile.
