AI-Generated Photos for Government Aid Promotion Stir Controversy; Singapore's Ministry of Finance Promises Improvements

The Singapore Ministry of Finance has trialed the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to generate local family images to promote government assistance programs. However, this initiative has sparked controversy within the community. On July 31, the Ministry responded to the backlash, promising to consider feedback and make improvements.

According to a report by 8world News on July 31, the controversy arose from three posts shared on social media between July 9 and 11. These posts showcased how different families living in public housing benefit from the current year's budget. Accompanying each post were AI-generated images depicting two four-member households and an elderly couple. Although each image was labeled "AI-generated" in the lower right corner, reactions among local netizens varied widely. Some expressed confusion as to why real photos were not used, with comments describing the images as "disturbing" and "eerily reminiscent of scam advertisements." Conversely, some users appreciated the Ministry’s innovative approach and speculated if using AI was a cost-saving measure. Others suggested that the government should employ local photographers and artists for these visuals.

In a creative response, some netizens have taken to social media to share their own photos in a similar style, receiving positive feedback and being labeled as "a great attempt" that feels more authentic.

On July 31, local resident Rita told a special correspondent for Global Times in Singapore, “Generative AI offers limitless possibilities, but it also prompts people to question where the boundaries of authenticity lie.”

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Finance explained that the department aims to raise awareness among local communities regarding various assistance measures through diverse platforms. To cater to different audiences, the Ministry employs various visual elements, including photos and videos, alongside its posts. The initiative explores additional visual effects based on designs created by their designers while experimenting with AI technology.
