Amazon is navigating federal antitrust charges related to its online marketplace and advertising services, yet the tech giant continues to innovate. Today, CEO Andy Jassy announced a new generative AI feature for Amazon's Ad Console, allowing third-party vendors to enhance product images with AI-generated backgrounds.
According to a blog post from Amazon, this feature can dramatically increase engagement. For instance, when a product, like a toaster, is showcased in a lifestyle setting—such as on a kitchen counter next to a croissant—click-through rates can soar by 40% compared to standard images.
To utilize this feature, users start by navigating to the Ad Console, where they can create ads for their products. After entering at least three product serial numbers in the "Enter List" section, they can click "Add" to generate a new list. Selecting "Go to creative" leads them to the option to "Customize Images," where they can input text prompts for backgrounds, limited to 300 characters.
This functionality resembles popular text-to-image generators like OpenAI's DALL-E 3 and Midjourney, allowing users to describe the desired image, which the AI then creates.
Additionally, the new AI product image generator features thematic enhancements. After generating a background, users can click "enhance with a theme" to incorporate props fitting various themes, such as "Pumpkin spice" for an autumn atmosphere. Amazon's promotional video showcases numerous themes that span various aesthetics—from "cottage" to "metallic."
According to Amazon, this tool aims to empower sellers without in-house design resources or agency support, facilitating the creation of brand-themed imagery. The feature is currently in beta, following a similar rollout by Meta Platforms for its advertisers on Facebook and Instagram.
