Anthropic, a leading generative AI startup backed by $7.6 billion in funding, is rolling out a new paid plan tailored for enterprises, specifically addressing the needs of highly regulated industries such as healthcare, finance, and law. Alongside this, the company is introducing a new iOS app.
The Team plan gives businesses prioritized access to Claude 3, Anthropic’s advanced family of generative AI models, and offers enhanced administrative and user management controls.
"Anthropic launched the Team plan in response to increasing demand from enterprise clients wanting to integrate Claude’s advanced AI capabilities into their operations," said Scott White, product lead at Anthropic. "This plan caters to organizations of various sizes and sectors, enabling employees to leverage Claude’s language understanding and generation capabilities in a secure environment."
The Team plan enhances the existing individual premium option, Pro, by allowing businesses to enjoy "greater usage per user," enabling them to "significantly increase" interactions with Claude. Team customers will benefit from a 200,000-token (~150,000-word) context window, alongside all the Pro plan advantages, including early access to new features.
Context window refers to the amount of input data a model considers before generating output. While smaller context windows may lead to missed or forgotten information in conversations, larger contexts enhance understanding and continuity.
The Team plan also introduces new tools for managing billing and user oversight. In the near future, it will gain collaborative features such as citations to support AI-generated claims (a common issue with AI models) and integrations with platforms like Salesforce and code repositories. Additionally, it will include a collaborative workspace for teams to work on AI-generated documents and projects.
In the short term, Team customers will utilize tool capabilities with Claude 3, now in open beta, allowing customization for tasks like checking stock prices or weather forecasts, akin to OpenAI’s GPTs.
“By enabling seamless integration of Claude into enterprise workflows, the Team plan positions Anthropic to secure a significant share of the enterprise market as companies transition from AI experimentation to full-scale implementations aimed at achieving transformative results,” White remarked. “In 2023, businesses explored AI; now, in 2024, the emphasis is on leveraging real applications that deliver measurable value.”
Despite these ambitions, Anthropic may face challenges in convincing enterprises to adopt its solutions. A recent Gartner survey revealed that 49% of organizations find it hard to quantify and illustrate the value of AI initiatives, complicating internal buy-in. Additionally, a survey by McKinsey indicated that 66% of executives believe generative AI is still years away from yielding significant business results.
Nevertheless, corporate spending on generative AI is projected to skyrocket. IDC forecasts that it will reach $15.1 billion by 2027, an almost eightfold increase from 2023.
This robust growth may explain why generative AI vendors, particularly OpenAI, are intensifying their focus on enterprise solutions. OpenAI reports having over 600,000 users for its enterprise-tier ChatGPT, having rolled out tools aimed at meeting corporate compliance and governance standards.
Anthropic’s Team plan is competitively priced at $30 per user per month, requiring a minimum of five users. In contrast, OpenAI does not publicly disclose its pricing for ChatGPT Enterprise, but anecdotal reports suggest costs can range from $30 to $60 per user depending on the number of licenses purchased.
"Anthropic’s Team plan is both competitive and affordable, particularly given the value it delivers to organizations," White noted. "The straightforward per-user model allows businesses to start small and scale effectively. This approach supports our growth while enabling enterprises to strategically harness AI capabilities."
Anthropic is launching the Team plan from a position of strength, having secured a $4 billion investment from Amazon in March, following a $2 billion investment from Google. The company is on track to exceed $850 million in annual revenue by the end of 2024, a 70% increase from previous forecasts. This positions Team as a natural avenue for growth, allowing Anthropic to build its presence while demonstrating the advantages of its generative AI solutions.
In addition to the Team plan, Anthropic has unveiled its iOS app, a move anticipated after the company hired iOS engineers recently. This app allows users access to Claude 3, including free and Pro subscription options, and seamlessly syncs with the web client. It also integrates vision capabilities, enabling real-time analysis of uploaded images.
"By offering the same functionality as the web version—like chat history syncing and photo uploads—our iOS app aims to become an integral part of users’ daily lives, whether for personal or professional purposes," White stated. “This app complements our web interface and API, providing another way for users to interact with our AI assistant. As we continue to refine our technologies, we will explore further opportunities to deliver value across platforms, including mobile applications.”
