Apple CEO Tim Cook addressed concerns about the company's position in artificial intelligence during the recent Q4 earnings call with investors. He highlighted the significant strides Apple has made, emphasizing that recent advancements, including features in iOS 17, were made possible by AI technology. Cook specifically noted innovations like Personal Voice and Live Voicemail as examples of Apple's commitment to integrating AI.
Interestingly, these features may not be immediately recognized as AI by consumers, which could be intentional. “We describe them based on their benefits to users,” Cook explained. “However, the underlying technology is rooted in AI and machine learning.”
One standout feature, Personal Voice, enhances accessibility by generating an automated voice that mimics the user's own voice, particularly benefiting those experiencing speech loss due to health issues like ALS. To create their unique voice, users read prompts for 15 minutes into their device's microphone, after which machine learning algorithms process the audio locally on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
Live Voicemail represents another innovation in iOS 17, providing real-time transcription of voicemail messages as they are being recorded. “AI powers these features,” Cook affirmed. He added that life-saving functionalities on Apple devices, such as fall detection, crash detection, and ECG tracking on the Apple Watch, also rely on AI technology.
Cook further indicated that Apple is actively working on generative AI technologies, though he refrained from sharing specific details, stating, “We keep such information close to our chest.”
He assured investors of Apple's substantial investment in AI development, emphasizing that it will be approached responsibly. “Expect to see product innovations over time that integrate these advanced technologies,” he stated.
Despite Apple's efforts, there is a perception that the company needs to catch up in consumer-facing AI applications, especially with the recent hype surrounding tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT and similar offerings from competitors such as Anthropic and Google. Reports suggest Apple is significantly increasing its AI budget, with estimates indicating it could reach “millions of dollars a day.” Multiple teams are reportedly focused on developing large language models (LLMs) to enhance user experiences, aiming to allow Siri to automate tasks that currently require manual programming through features like the Shortcuts app.
Bloomberg has also noted that the upcoming version of iOS will bring additional AI functionalities, enhancing Siri and the Messages app to provide more intuitive responses and sentence completions, akin to Google’s Gmail autocomplete feature. Furthermore, there are indications that generative AI capabilities may soon extend to Apple’s development tools, such as Xcode.
