Apple is set to enhance Siri and other first-party applications by integrating ChatGPT, OpenAI’s advanced AI chatbot. This exciting announcement was made during the WWDC 2024 keynote event in Cupertino on Monday.
"We're thrilled to collaborate with Apple to introduce ChatGPT to their users in an innovative way," stated OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. "Apple shares our dedication to safety and innovation, making this partnership a perfect fit with OpenAI’s mission to democratize advanced AI technology."
With this integration, Siri will leverage ChatGPT to provide expert assistance where needed. For instance, if you're looking for meal ideas that incorporate ingredients from your garden, you can ask Siri. Once you grant permission, Siri will communicate with ChatGPT to provide tailored suggestions.
You'll also be able to enhance your inquiries by including photos or asking questions related to your documents and PDFs. Furthermore, ChatGPT will be embedded in system-wide tools like Writing Tools, allowing users to generate content—including graphics—and refine initial ideas with the help of ChatGPT.
These ChatGPT enhancements are expected to roll out later this year on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. Importantly, users can access these features for free without the requirement of setting up a ChatGPT or OpenAI account. Initially, the integration will utilize GPT-4o, OpenAI’s newly released flagship generative AI model.
Subscribers of OpenAI's premium ChatGPT plans will have the opportunity to utilize paid features within Siri and other applications that incorporate ChatGPT. Apple has emphasized that privacy safeguards are an integral part of these integrations—specifically, OpenAI will not store requests, and users’ IP addresses will remain hidden.
