Apple Unveils 20 Innovative Open Source AI Models for Developers

Apple has made significant strides in the realm of open-source artificial intelligence, introducing 20 new AI models to support developers in enhancing on-device AI capabilities. This move follows the successful integration of OpenAI and expands on Apple’s previous offering of a single AI model, OpenELM, which launched in April.

These newly released models are now available on Apple’s Hugging Face page, integrated into the CoreML framework, which is specifically designed to optimize AI workloads directly on devices. Among the models included are advanced options like DETR-Resnet50, intended for semantic segmentation, and FastViT for image classification. These models cater to various domain-specific applications, effectively processing images, text, and converting audio to text.

Apple's enhancements to CoreML allow developers to leverage the power of generative AI and machine learning directly on Apple hardware, ensuring that models can operate without a constant network connection. Specifically, these CoreML models give open-source developers the flexibility to deploy large language models and diffusion models efficiently, while minimizing memory usage and power consumption.

A significant advantage of the CoreML framework is its compatibility with third-party training libraries such as TensorFlow and PyTorch, facilitating the integration of pre-trained models into the Apple ecosystem. For instance, Vaibhav Srivastav, a data scientist at Hugging Face, utilized one of these new CoreML models to significantly boost the speed of image generation for Stable Diffusion 3.

The CoreML models are compatible with Apple Macs running macOS High Sierra and iPhones operating on iOS 11 and above. During a recent discussion, Clement Delangue, co-founder and CEO of Hugging Face, mentioned the active collaboration with Apple to cultivate a vibrant community around its MLX framework—Apple's inaugural step into the open-source AI territory. This framework provides essential tools for developers to train and run large language models efficiently on Apple devices.

At the recent Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple reinforced its commitment to on-device AI processing, a sentiment echoed by Hugging Face’s CEO. However, the approach has not been universally embraced. Elon Musk has been vocal in his criticism, even going so far as to threaten to prohibit the use of Apple devices among his company staff, labeling the integration of AI capabilities as “creepy spyware.”
