While concerns about unintended consequences, akin to a “rise of the machines” scenario, linger, history shows that such advancements more often lead to transformative societal shifts. According to William “whurley” Hurley, the founder and CEO of Strangeworks, quantum mechanics underlines both the universe and the human brain. He states, “To achieve true AI, a quantum mechanical foundation is essential. While today's developments, including automation and convolutional neural networks, showcase impressive progress, the true potential emerges when quantum infrastructure and AI software collaborate.”
Romi Mahajan, CEO of ExoFusion, describes the relationship between quantum computing and AI as that of conjoined twins. Reflecting on the upcoming 100th anniversary of quantum mechanics, he suggests that we are on the brink of another paradigm shift, similar to the one that occurred a century ago. Michael Shepherd, senior distinguished engineer and chief technology officer at Dell Technologies, adds that while AI primarily operates on graphics processing units (GPUs), quantum processing units (QPUs) are now playing a pivotal role in this dynamic. “Each technology excels at different tasks," he explains. "The interplay between AI and QPUs within the ecosystem of CPUs and GPUs is a thrilling frontier.”
### Unintended Consequences of AI and Quantum Computing
Despite the best intentions, the evolution of technology frequently brings about unforeseen repercussions. Mahajan emphasizes the necessity of probing deeper: “We must ask profound questions and remain open to all viewpoints. This is not a binary conversation. Some consequences yield significant benefits, while others can be detrimental. We must navigate these complexities with honesty.”
Shepherd highlights the dichotomy of human behavior, noting both commendable and questionable intentions in technological advancement. He encourages reflective thought on how humanity has adapted to historical technological shifts, from the advent of farming to modern innovations. “Our reality is one of continual change,” he states. “In 2018, I urged our executive board to become lifelong learners. AI won’t replace jobs—it’s the people harnessing AI who may. By approaching technology like tools—such as calculators or cars—we can empower everyone, including those who aren’t technologically inclined, to achieve greater creativity and productivity.”
### Perspectives on AI's Future
Whurley identifies three potential adverse outcomes associated with AI: “The Terminator scenario, where machines dominate us; the iRobot scenario, where AI becomes merely a companion; and the Elysium scenario, which perpetuates social stratification. Many fears about AI can be categorized under these three themes.” He warns that the most pressing concern is the possibility of a class divide emerging, delineating those who leverage AI in their work from those who cannot, resulting in unidirectional wealth transfers.
In contextualizing societal resistance to technological change, whurley draws parallels to historical instances, such as Plato and Socrates’ critiques of writing and the objections of bank tellers when ATMs were first introduced in the 1980s. While those machines replaced certain job functions, they also paved the way for new customer services. “It's commonplace to harbor pessimistic views about technology's future,” he observes. “When contemplating scenarios like the Terminator narrative, we should ask why a machine would harbor feelings of anger or desire for resources. It’s crucial to address unintended consequences of technology while maintaining a balanced perspective.”
