Björk is renowned for her innovative use of technology in music, and her latest project takes this creativity to new heights. The Icelandic artist has partnered with Microsoft AI for Kórsafn ("choral archives"), a continuous composition featured in the lobby of the Sister City hotel in New York City. This groundbreaking project showcases selections from Björk's extensive choral arrangements, including new pieces crafted by the Hamrahlid Choir, all influenced by real-time data captured from a rooftop camera.
Kórsafn dynamically responds to the sky's changing conditions, including cloud types, bird activity, passing aircraft, and even fluctuations in barometric pressure. Additionally, long-term weather patterns will gradually transform the composition, making each listening experience unique.
This work is the second installment in a series of "lobby soundscapes" developed in collaboration with Microsoft and Sister City. The inaugural piece, created by experimental artist Julianna Barwick, debuted alongside the hotel in April 2019.
While AI-generated music is not new—collaborators like Arca have produced evolving soundtracks for venues like the Museum of Modern Art, and Holly Herndon has integrated AI into her album Proto—Björk’s involvement could further highlight the technology's potential. This project may inspire artists seeking new creative avenues and engage fans curious about how AI can influence their favorite artist's sound.
