Canva has introduced a range of new AI features to its web-based design platform, enhancing tools for text generation, video effects, and its powerful new text-to-image application, “Dream Lab.” This cutting-edge image generator emerged from Canva’s acquisition of the generative AI startup Leonardo.ai earlier this year.
Dream Lab utilizes Leonardo’s Phoenix model, allowing users to create images from textual descriptions in various styles, including “3D render” and “Illustration.” While Canva already offers a Stable Diffusion-based AI image generator and supports several third-party applications, Dream Lab brings notable improvements. It excels in creating photographic styles and multi-subject images, and includes a functionality that references existing images for more precise output—similar to Photoshop’s Reference Image tool.
Additionally, Canva has enhanced its “Magic” AI tools, improving accuracy and introducing one-click autocomplete commands for the Magic Write feature. Whiteboards now include AI-powered summarization and real-time reaction stickers for collaborative projects. New video editing options automatically generate captions and introduce fresh animation effects. Users can also incorporate interactive charts and graphs into their presentations for better data visualization.
To further enrich its offerings, Canva’s asset library now features an expanded collection of royalty-free music and cinematic videos through a partnership with the Artlist music platform.
Recently, Canva announced plans to increase subscription pricing for some business customers, reflecting the value and enhanced experience that generative AI tools bring to the platform. While the Leonardo.ai acquisition contributes to this investment, users may feel the pinch of increased costs for incremental improvements rather than groundbreaking new capabilities.
