Those of us using Slack or Microsoft Teams for work may feel little need for a new enterprise-focused chat application. However, ClickUp, a San Diego-based project management software company, sees things differently.
Today, ClickUp, founded seven years ago, announced its launch of ClickUp Chat, a tool that seamlessly integrates team communication into its existing project management platform. Unlike its competitors, ClickUp Chat features AI-powered suggestions, summaries, and other functionalities right from the start.
While Teams and Slack have been enhancing their platforms with AI capabilities over the years, ClickUp believes its approach of launching AI tools natively from day one creates a more powerful and effective user experience.
By combining chat functionality with its all-in-one task management software, ClickUp aims to lead the charge in unifying workplace communication, driving productivity among team members.
According to ClickUp's Founder and CEO, Zeb Evans, this new tool represents more than just another chat application; it introduces a new way of working.
“I wanted to build a platform that converges everything—not just bundling products but creating one application that does it all,” Evans shared during a recent media video interview.
ClickUp’s Mission to Reduce Tool Overload
ClickUp was founded after Evans faced multiple life-threatening situations that motivated him to optimize his time. Since then, ClickUp has gained 35 million users globally, striving to simplify work management across teams. The company envisions a workplace where generative AI and large language models (LLMs) facilitate unified communication, tasks, and project management using a single application.
“With AI, you’ll be able to build software faster,” Evans stated. “Applications will evolve into super apps. We were pioneers in focusing on convergence.”
Evans aims to eliminate inefficiencies caused by multiple disconnected tools—a challenge he faced in previous ventures. “In my past work, we juggled 15 different productivity tools, which created significant inefficiency,” he explained.
While ClickUp will continue to allow integrations with other apps, its goal is ultimately to encourage users to consolidate their tools, reducing costs by migrating data from competing task management products.
The launch of ClickUp Chat is a significant step in this direction.
Since Slack's inception in 2014, workplace communication platforms have transformed how distributed teams function, yet they also introduce inefficiencies. Teams often grapple with overwhelming notifications and fragmented conversations, resulting in distractions.
Evans points out that while Slack and Teams enhance collaboration, they typically operate in isolation from task management platforms. Teams often discuss tasks in one app while managing them in another, leading to disorganization.
“ClickUp enables you to eliminate 'toggle tax.' Instead of relying on multiple tools, you can access all necessary features within ClickUp and easily transfer your data,” he noted.
How ClickUp Chat Works and Its AI-Powered Features
ClickUp Chat offers several innovative features to enhance team communication and productivity:
- Connected Conversations and Tasks: Channels in ClickUp Chat link discussions to projects, tasks, documents, forms, and whiteboards, helping users stay organized and relevant.
- FollowUps™: This feature prioritizes messages, connecting important discussions to actionable tasks, reducing the risk of lost communications.
- Convert Messages into Tasks: Teams can transform any chat message into a task directly within ClickUp, using ClickUp’s Brain™ AI to capture context for easy execution.
- AI-Powered Insights: Features like AI CatchUp summarize missed conversations, allowing users to quickly catch up without sifting through every message, while AI CleanUp identifies important updates.
- Enhanced Direct Messaging (DMs): Users can schedule meetings, assign tasks, and view team members’ workloads directly within chat for smoother workflows.
- SyncUps: ClickUp Chat supports live video and audio calls with screen sharing, automatically summarizing meetings and creating action items for follow-up.
Reconnecting and Organizing Disconnected Workflows
ClickUp Chat excels in synchronizing conversations with work context. The platform's Synced Threads feature aligns discussions with tasks, ensuring conversations remain relevant to ongoing projects.
For instance, conversations about tasks or documents are automatically linked to their respective resources, providing users with a comprehensive view of all connected discussions.
The Posts feature supports longer-form communication, facilitating updates and detailed ideas without overwhelming chat threads, thus enabling deeper discussions while maintaining transparency.
AI-Driven Task Management
The integration of AI within ClickUp Chat aims to synergize communication and productivity seamlessly.
With tools like AI Answers, users can query project details, with AI sourcing information from chat histories and the broader ClickUp workspace. This minimizes repetitive communications by keeping vital information easily accessible.
Additionally, the AI Task Creation feature allows users to quickly generate new tasks from any chat message with a single click, automatically populating task names, descriptions, and relevant links.
ClickUp leverages OpenAI’s GPT-4 model alongside proprietary models for specific functionalities, enhancing efficiency in task management and ensuring that every discussion leads to actionable steps.
Pricing for ClickUp Chat
The new ClickUp Chat is bundled within the ClickUp suite, starting at just $7 per month per user. “We aim to provide the best value and product at a great price. I believe our pricing is unmatched among our competitors,” Evans asserted.
By linking conversations directly to projects and employing AI to streamline workflows, ClickUp strives to cultivate a more organized, focused, and productive workplace—progressing toward its goal of becoming the “Everything App for Work.”
