Clout Kitchen announced today that it has successfully raised $4.45 million in seed funding, which will be directed towards developing its new creator-powered products and experiences. The flagship offering is Backseat AI, an AI companion for League of Legends, co-created with gaming influencer Tyler “Tyler1” Steinkamp. This innovative tool emulates the personalities of popular gaming content creators, enhancing the player experience.
Backseat AI operates in compliance with Riot Games’ in-game API, delivering real-time gameplay tips via an AI voice that mirrors a player’s favorite creator. Originally launched for early access testing in June, the full version costs $4.99 per month for each creator-specific buddy chosen. Current options include Tyler1, cosplayer and streamer Emily “Emiru” Schunk, and professional esports player Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski, making it ideal for entry-to-mid-level players.
Clout Kitchen CEO Justin Gorriceta-Banusing described Backseat AI as a real-time companion that not only advises players on gameplay but also adds commentary in the voice of beloved creators. The product features visual overlays offering tips, tricks, and stats, akin to having a supportive friend help you improve in your favorite game.
The seed funding round was led by Peak XV’s Surge and a16z Speedrun, with contributions from AppWorks, Antler, Hustle Fund, Founders Launchpad, Orvel Ventures, and several creators. Jack Soslow, an investment partner at a16z Games, stated, “At a16z, we believe in the transformative power of technology and games to reshape how we connect, create, and experience the world. Clout Kitchen embodies this vision, and we are excited to support their efforts to revolutionize fan engagement with creators and games.”
Tyler1's journey into fatherhood inspired part of Backseat AI's development, as he sought a way to engage with his community without sacrificing time with his child. Banusing explained, “What we do addresses the creator scale and time problem. Many creators rely on ads, subscription platforms like Patreon, and brand deals, which can be time-consuming and may not always align with their interests. AI buddies provide a unique connection for fans, offering interaction with their favorite creators without consuming valuable time.”
Looking ahead, Clout Kitchen plans to expand its offerings to other games and collaborate with more creators. Banusing expressed their ambition: “As we grow, we aim to build similar applications for various games and verticals, bringing beloved creators into everything you love to do. We’re exploring opportunities in games like World of Warcraft and even in non-gaming sectors like fitness. Our philosophy is simple: ‘All your favorite games, all your favorite people.’”
