Default Search Engine of ChatGPT: Exploring Bing OpenAI's Chatbot Integration

On May 24, Microsoft announced the integration of Bing as the default search engine for OpenAI's chatbot, ChatGPT. This update expands ChatGPT's capabilities, allowing it to access real-time information from the entire internet rather than being limited to its original training data, which concluded in September 2021.

Launched on November 30, 2022, ChatGPT quickly gained popularity, attracting over 100 million users due to its ability to generate diverse content—including articles, stories, essays, jokes, and code—tailored to specific user requests. To accommodate the increasing demand, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Plus, a premium subscription service priced at $20 per month. Subscribers benefit from priority access during peak times, quicker response rates, and early access to new features and enhancements.

On Tuesday, Microsoft revealed that ChatGPT Plus subscribers will immediately gain access to new search functionalities, with plans to extend these features to all free ChatGPT users via plugins. Microsoft, a key investor and partner of OpenAI, initially invested $1 billion in 2019 and has since expanded its collaboration with substantial investments this year. Furthermore, on February 7, Microsoft launched an upgraded version of Bing, powered by OpenAI’s latest language model, GPT-4, which became widely available on May 4 after a preview period.
