This implies that limitations in representation among technical teams directly affect the performance of AI features, such as facial recognition and language processing. If the datasets showcase biases related to race, gender, or ability, such biases will inevitably be integrated into the AI, leading to reinforced inequalities with practical ramifications.

For instance, research has demonstrated that in the United States, individuals identifying as Black encounter twice as many errors when using Automatic Speech Recognition technology compared to their white counterparts. Similarly, AI image recognition systems have been shown to inaccurately identify Asian individuals, often misreporting simple actions like blinking. The implications of underrepresented teams in AI development are not only limiting—they can also perpetuate cycles of discrimination and injustice.

As a female leader in technology, I am particularly committed to uplifting the voices of women in our field. My involvement with initiatives like Women in Telecoms and Technology (WiTT) has been crucial in shaping my leadership style while supporting fellow women in tech.

We have already met our 2025 goal of increasing Black, Latino, and Native American representation in leadership roles by 30%. Currently, our numbers reflect the highest representation of women across technical, non-technical, and leadership roles, both globally and in the U.S. Our ongoing efforts include learning from our customers and facilitating a two-way exchange of ideas.

To harness the full potential of AI, companies must embed DEI principles within their development strategies. It is imperative that no voice is excluded from the conversation surrounding AI ethics and implementation. Industry leaders should prioritize transparent recruitment processes, challenge internal dialogues, and advocate for diverse perspectives within their teams.
