Figma’s AI-Powered App Generator Returns After Controversy Over Apple Copyright Concerns

Figma introduced "Make Designs" in June, allowing designers to leverage generative AI for app design. Early users showcased its ability to create mock-ups resembling the iPhone's weather app. In response, Figma paused the feature for additional testing, clarifying that it was not trained on customer data and utilized off-the-shelf generative AI models.

Now rebranded as "First Draft," this feature has returned in a limited beta. Figma is enhancing First Draft with several updates: users can now select from four different libraries tailored to their needs, from wireframing options for low-fidelity sketches to higher-fidelity libraries that offer more visual elements and patterns.

In its announcement, Figma explained that First Draft operates without training on customer content. It employs established AI models, incorporating three main components: model, context, and prompt. The context includes unique mobile and desktop design systems with various components for assembly. Users set design goals through prompts, enabling the AI to select, arrange, and customize design components to create initial design drafts.

Figma assures that the feature’s relaunch followed "extensive analysis, iteration, and testing." Additionally, its other AI tools allow for auto-generating text to enhance design projects.
