Max Now Offers AI-Generated Closed Captions from Google

Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) is collaborating with Google Cloud to implement AI-generated closed captioning for its Max streaming service in the US. This innovative "caption AI" solution, powered by Google Cloud's Vertex AI platform, will initially enhance “unscripted programming” by converting speech to text. Captions generated will undergo human quality assurance to ensure accuracy.

Google reports that this workflow could reduce caption file creation time by up to 80% and lower costs by as much as 50% compared to traditional manual methods. WBD plans to continuously refine and train the caption AI to minimize errors. While most content on Max currently features closed captioning, WBD has not disclosed the full extent of AI implementation. Although automatic speech-to-text services have been available for years, WBD's adoption of cutting-edge AI technology signals a potential shift toward mainstream use in the industry.
