Google is launching a Gemini-powered update for Gmail on Android and iOS, enhancing smart replies to make them more relevant to individual emails. Announced in May, the new contextual Smart Replies provide "more detailed responses to fully capture the intent of your message" by considering the entire email thread.
Users can easily hover over each suggested reply to preview the text and choose the one that best fits their needs or writing style. These replies can be edited or sent right away, saving time and adding variety to responses beyond the standard “Yes, I’m working on it” or “No worries, thanks for the heads up!” The feature even includes options for an initial greeting and a sign-off.
With these automated options, users may find they don’t need to type at all when responding to emails. The new contextual Smart Replies are rolling out for Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, Education Premium, and Google One AI Premium subscribers. Currently, the feature is available only in English and builds on the original Smart Replies introduced in 2017.
