After integrating many Gemini AI features into Google Workspace, Google executives announced a significant step towards deploying AI agents extensively across organizations that utilize its cloud productivity platform, which includes popular tools like Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Meet, Google Sheets, and Google Slides.
With over 8 million paying customers, Google Workspace holds a commanding 84.95% share of the cloud work applications market, according to Thrive, a marketing agency.
Are You Ready for AI Agents?
Aparna Pappu, Vice President and General Manager of Google Workspace, explained that Google is adopting a “crawl, walk, run” strategy to expand AI agent accessibility.
“Bringing AI agents is like constructing building blocks where users train their assistants to understand their workflows,” Pappu stated during a Q&A at the Gemini at Work event in New York. “Our goal is to develop trained assistants that evolve into full-fledged agents.”
Recently, Google announced that the standalone Gemini chat app, powered by its Gemini AI model, is now integrated into Workspace for Business, Enterprise, and Frontline paid accounts.
Gemini for Workspace empowers users to summarize emails in Gmail, locate information across multiple Google Drive documents, and create custom charts in Sheets through natural language prompts.
In contrast to other platforms focusing on niche workflows like sales and marketing, Google Workspace caters to a broad and diverse set of users.
Pappu mentioned that Google has been exploring AI agents for Workspace for some time, citing the AI Teammate demo introduced during the Google I/O developer conference in May.
“We launched AI Teammates which perform specific tasks, and we aim to scale this across enterprises using Workspace,” Pappu remarked.
Furthermore, Google plans to gradually introduce Gemini-powered workflow automation in Workspace starting in October. This feature will enable users to automate tasks such as reading emails or documents, categorizing them, and executing designated actions.
For example, when a user receives an invoice via email, Gemini will recognize its association with finance and direct it to the appropriate team for payment, showcasing a foundational component of AI agent functionality.
AI Agents for Enhanced Productivity
AI agents have become crucial for organizations aiming to boost employee productivity. Recently, multiple companies introduced AI agents or facilitated connections for integration. For instance, Slack has added AI agent integration from Salesforce, Asana, Cohere, Workday, Adobe Express, and Writer. ServiceNow also debuted its own AI agents for customer use.
Meta announced plans to enable users to create agents on WhatsApp or Messenger to efficiently respond to inquiries.
Given its extensive customer base, it's expected for a leading organization like Google to provide access to AI agents.
Many businesses, whether large or small, utilize Google’s Workspace suite of email, documents, and spreadsheets alongside other Google Cloud products that integrate with customer management systems.
Google's AI-Powered Productivity Vision
The Gemini at Work event highlighted how Google’s flagship AI models have significantly improved time management for its customers.
“We've received feedback from users indicating increased employee retention and satisfaction thanks to Gemini,” Pappu shared. “It's not just about time savings but also about alleviating the menial tasks that can drain morale.”
Google reports that users of Gemini, whether within Workspace or elsewhere, have enhanced productivity and significantly reduced time spent on monotonous tasks like coding translations.
Pappu noted that Gemini enables even small businesses to become more competitive by providing expertise without relying on external consultants.
