Google to Generate AI-Driven Disclosures for Political Advertisements

Google is simplifying the way advertisers disclose AI-generated content in political ads. According to a recent update, Google will automatically generate disclosures when advertisers label their election ads as containing “synthetic or digitally altered content.” Previously, Google required advertisers to provide their own “clear and conspicuous” disclosures for ads featuring AI content. Now, with a simple checkbox in campaign settings, advertisers will see automatic in-ad disclosures for “altered or synthetic content.”

These disclosures will be visible in feeds and YouTube Shorts on mobile devices, as well as in-stream ads across phones, computers, and TVs. However, advertisers will still need to include their own disclosures for other ad formats.

With the US presidential election approaching, concerns about AI's role in political advertising are growing. In May, the Senate Rules Committee moved forward with a bill mandating disclosures for AI-generated content in political ads, while the Federal Communications Commission is considering a similar policy.
