Google’s NotebookLM has recently gained attention for its innovative feature that allows users to generate audio content similar to podcasts. While the platform has added new functionalities since its launch in July 2023, it has also found significant traction in enterprise settings.
NotebookLM enables users to consolidate various documents—such as PDFs, websites, Google Docs, and Google Slides—into a single notebook. Users can also interact with the tool by asking Gemini questions regarding the contents. Since becoming generally available in the U.S. in December 2023, NotebookLM has expanded its compatibility with different file types.
Increased Use in Corporate Environments
One notable trend is the growing adoption of NotebookLM among corporate teams for research sharing and information management. Raiza Martin, the product manager for NotebookLM at Google, shared that companies are leveraging the platform’s organizational features to streamline access to essential data.
“We initially observed students using NotebookLM to enhance their learning, but we are now seeing professionals employing it for similar purposes,” Martin noted, emphasizing that the platform attracts a substantial number of enterprise users.
Generate Podcasts from Your Research
Since its inception, NotebookLM has continually introduced new features. The latest update allows users to create audio summaries of their notebooks, featuring two speakers discussing the material.
“The conversation format was selected for its novelty and engagement potential. The dynamic of dual speakers enhances content retention differently than a single narrator,” Martin explained.
Google has observed that users are utilizing NotebookLM to collate research and insights essential for their work. Enterprises can use NotebookLM as a repository for data, which can subsequently feed into retrieval augmented generation (RAG) search queries. Notably, NotebookLM functions as a RAG tool powered by Google’s Gemini 1.5 Pro.
I had the opportunity to test the audio generation feature by providing NotebookLM with documents on global AI regulations, including the European Union’s AI Act. The generated audio not only summarized the act but also incorporated a discussion reflecting diverse perspectives, reminiscent of the tech podcasts I enjoy.
Some users have shared how they utilize the audio feature for various purposes, including explaining codebases and summarizing blog posts.
Future Developments with NotebookLM
“This is just the beginning; we plan to introduce customization options for the number of speakers, voice types, and content adjustments in future updates,” Martin stated.
The versatility of NotebookLM has led to a surge in creative use cases. For instance, a Dungeons and Dragons dungeon master has utilized the tool for campaign management.
“There’s still much to educate users on regarding the tool’s potential, but it’s encouraging to see how quickly people are recognizing its value,” Martin added.
Although NotebookLM will remain a standalone product for now, insights gained from its use may inform future enhancements across other Google productivity tools.
