X has updated its AI chatbot, Grok, following concerns from five secretaries of state about the spread of election misinformation. In response, Grok will now direct users to "Vote.gov" for accurate and up-to-date information regarding the 2024 U.S. Elections when asked about election-related topics.
The change comes after election officials from Minnesota, New Mexico, Michigan, Washington, and Pennsylvania sent a letter to Elon Musk, the owner of X. They reported instances where Grok provided incorrect information about ballot deadlines in their states. Despite being a service exclusively for paying subscribers on the X platform, the officials noted that the misinformation reached "millions of people" before it was corrected a week later.
“We appreciate X’s actions to enhance their platform and hope they continue to implement measures that provide users with accurate information from reliable sources during this critical election year,” the officials stated regarding Grok’s new directive. “Elections require teamwork, and we welcome partners committed to ensuring free, fair, secure, and accurate elections.”
It's important to note that this update does not alter Grok’s recent feature that generates AI images related to elections, which have been used to create misleading or inflammatory portrayals of figures like Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. Additionally, X previously restricted the ability for some users to report posts containing electoral misinformation.
