Google Meet has introduced an AI-powered feature called “Take Notes for Me,” now available to Google Workspace customers using Gemini Enterprise, Gemini Education Premium, or AI Meetings & Messaging add-ons. This feature differs from Meet’s transcription tool by summarizing discussions instead of transcribing them verbatim. Initially unveiled at the 2023 Cloud Next conference, it currently supports only spoken English.
This tool's convenience is notable; it automatically generates notes in a Google Doc and attaches the file to the calendar event after your meeting. Additionally, the meeting organizer and other participants who opted in will receive the notes, ensuring that everyone stays informed.
Running late to a meeting? This feature automatically provides a summary of what you've missed, allowing you to catch up quickly without the need for others to repeat themselves. If you utilize Google Meet’s recording and transcription tools simultaneously, links to those recordings will also be included in the Google Doc containing your meeting notes.
“Take Notes for Me” could benefit those who struggle to process spoken language and take notes simultaneously, allowing for greater focus and participation during meetings.
Google plans to complete the rollout to all Google Workspace customers by September 10, 2024. While this feature is promising, it’s important to note that AI can produce inaccuracies; past experiences with Meet’s transcription tool indicate the necessity of reviewing and correcting the generated content. With that in mind, I remain cautiously optimistic about Google Meet’s ability to serve as an effective note-taker.
