Jony Ive has officially confirmed his collaboration with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on an AI hardware project, as revealed in a recent profile by The New York Times. This partnership comes nearly a year after initial reports about their potential collaboration surfaced.
While details are sparse, it’s noted that Ive met Altman through Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky. Funding for the initiative is being provided by Ive and Emerson Collective, Laurene Powell Jobs’ organization, with plans to raise up to $1 billion by year’s end. Interestingly, the article does not mention Masayoshi Son of SoftBank, who was previously rumored to be investing in the project.
Currently, the project employs just 10 people, including Tang Tan and Evans Hankey, both significant contributors to the iPhone's development. Ive's design firm, LoveFrom, is at the helm of the device's design. The team operates out of a 32,000-square-foot office in San Francisco, part of a $90 million real estate acquisition by Ive on a single city block.
The specifics of the device remain elusive. According to the Times, Ive and Altman have explored how generative AI could drive innovation in new computing devices, surpassing the capabilities of traditional software. Previous rumors suggested inspirations from touchscreen technology and the original iPhone, but concrete details about the AI product and its market launch are still under development, as noted by LoveFrom cofounder Marc Newson.
