Microsoft is introducing a customizable feature for the new Copilot key on Windows 11 laptops and keyboards. By default, this key launches Microsoft’s Copilot app, but users will soon have the flexibility to launch other MSIX-packaged applications that meet security and privacy standards. This functionality is currently available to beta testers in a new build of Windows 11.
As part of a significant evolution in Windows keyboards, the Copilot key marks the first major change in three decades. This initiative aims to encourage users to explore Microsoft’s AI assistant. Notably, new Copilot Plus PCs began shipping with this key earlier this year. However, the recent 24H2 update has transitioned the Copilot experience into a web app, limiting its integration with Windows settings. Consequently, users can no longer modify features like dark mode directly through the AI assistant.
While the future of the Copilot experience in Windows remains uncertain, there are expectations that the customization feature will be rolled out to all Windows 11 users in the upcoming months.
