OpenAI has recently announced the upcoming launch of its ChatGPT Mac desktop app, which is set to feature AI capabilities akin to Microsoft’s Copilot. Currently, ChatGPT operates within a browser environment, limiting its contextual awareness regarding other activities happening on your computer. However, the new desktop app allows the chatbot to access and interact with content displayed on your screen. In a demonstration, the app was shown running alongside another software, enabling users to inquire about visible elements, thereby significantly enhancing ChatGPT’s contextual awareness and functionality.
At this time, the desktop app will only be released for Mac users, likely because Windows already has its own Copilot feature. While Copilot is deeply integrated into Microsoft's suite of first-party applications like Edge, Word, and PowerPoint, ChatGPT’s ability to actively engage with on-screen content offers a noteworthy advantage. The updated GPT-4o model, which will be available at no cost, further boosts the AI capabilities for Mac users.
This announcement follows the introduction of Apple’s M4 chip in the iPad Pro, with the company claiming that its new neural engine outperforms the neural processing units (NPUs) found in current Windows AI PCs. Although the M4 chip has yet to make its debut in Mac computers, Apple remains committed to advancing on-device AI hardware in the future.
Looking ahead, Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) next month is anticipated to prominently feature AI developments, with updates to macOS taking center stage. Reports suggest that Apple is nearing a collaboration with OpenAI for ChatGPT integration, although specifics regarding these discussions remain under wraps.
Currently, the ChatGPT Mac app is available for ChatGPT Plus subscribers, with plans for a broader rollout in the coming weeks.
