Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) is collaborating with Google Cloud to enhance closed captioning for its Max streaming service in the US. Utilizing a new “caption AI” solution on Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform, WBD aims to produce speech-to-text for certain shows, beginning with “unscripted programming.”
These captions will benefit from human oversight to ensure high quality. Google claims that this innovative workflow could decrease caption file creation time by up to 80% and cut costs by up to 50% compared to traditional methods. WBD plans to continuously improve and train the caption AI, aiming to reduce errors further.
While most content on Max already includes closed captioning, WBD has not disclosed the extent of caption AI implementation. Automatic speech-to-text services for video captioning are not new, but with a significant player like WBD experimenting with this advanced AI technology, we may soon see it become standard practice in the industry.
