If you think navigating AI-generated images is challenging, Facebook and Instagram are now integrating them directly into your feeds. At the recent Meta Connect event, the company unveiled a test feature that creates AI-generated content based on your interests and current trends — some of which may even include your likeness.
When you encounter an "Imagined for You" image in your feed, you'll have the option to share it or generate a new one in real-time. For instance, one example features several AI-generated depictions of “an enchanted realm, where magic fills the air.” However, some images could feature your face, which might be surprising as you scroll through your feed.
Meta spokesperson Amanda Felix explained that the platform will only create AI images of your face if you opt into the "Imagine Yourself" feature, which requires you to upload photos and accept the terms of use. Importantly, you will have the ability to remove these AI-generated images from your feed.
Recent insights revealed that using Snapchat’s AI selfie feature allows the company to utilize your face in ads visible only to you, unless you disable this option. Similarly, Facebook and Instagram will display AI-generated content exclusively to you, with sharing remaining at your discretion.
In an interview, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg described the addition of AI images to feeds as the next “logical jump” for Facebook and Instagram. He noted that feeds initially focused on content from friends and profiles you follow, but are now expanding to include AI-generated content that aligns with your interests. The impact of this feature depends on its execution and overall quality.
Currently, this feature is in the testing phase, and it remains uncertain how broadly or quickly it will be deployed. However, merging AI-generated images into our feeds may significantly change the nature of these platforms, shifting focus away from connecting with friends.
