Meta is introducing a new feature for Facebook and Instagram that will insert AI-generated content directly into users' feeds, tailored to their interests and current trends. Announced during the Meta Connect event, this feature, dubbed “Imagined for You,” will even create images that incorporate users' faces.
When you encounter an “Imagined for You” image, you’ll have options to share it or generate a new one on the spot. Some examples showcase enchanting AI-generated scenes, while others could eerily feature your own likeness. These images are designed to provide a personalized experience, as seen in scenarios like envisioning yourself as a video game character or an astronaut.
Meta spokesperson Amanda Felix clarified that AI-generated images of your face will only be created if you opt into the “Imagine Yourself” feature by uploading photos and agreeing to the terms. Users will have the ability to remove these AI images from their feeds if they choose.
Recent findings revealed that Snapchat's AI selfie feature permits the use of users' faces in ads specifically targeted at them unless they disable the function. Similarly, Facebook and Instagram plan to display AI-generated content exclusively to individual users, with sharing remaining an optional feature.
In an interview, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg described the addition of AI images to feeds as the next “logical jump” for the platforms. He noted the evolution of feeds from ones focused solely on friends' content to incorporating AI-generated material that might pique users' interests. The extent of this feature's rollout remains uncertain as it is currently in the testing phase, but the integration of AI-generated images represents a significant shift away from the original intent of these platforms as spaces for connecting with friends.
