Meta is keen to establish itself as a leading AI company and is reportedly exploring a new hardware venture: AI-enabled headphones dubbed “Camerabuds.” According to recent reports, these innovative headphones or earbuds will feature two outward-facing cameras, allowing them to detect the user’s surroundings and support real-time AI functionalities. This concept aligns with the multimodal AI features integrated into Meta’s smart glasses.
However, the future of this project remains uncertain. Mark Zuckerberg has reviewed several designs but has yet to find one that meets his satisfaction. Internal concerns also include battery life, heat management, and privacy issues associated with camera-equipped wearables. Additionally, users with long hair may encounter challenges, as their hair could obstruct the cameras' field of view.
Meta’s track record with hardware projects has been mixed. The company discontinued its Portal smart speaker lineup in 2022 and abandoned plans for a camera-enabled smartwatch. On a positive note, the latest Ray-Ban smart glasses featuring Meta AI have received a warmer reception, with Zuckerberg noting high demand and increased user engagement compared to the first-generation models.
Integrating Meta AI into headphones would align with the company’s strategy to compete with other prominent AI developers. While existing AI hardware solutions, such as Rabbit’s R1 and Humane’s AI Pin, have underperformed, Meta aims to market its cutting-edge AI features in a familiar form factor like headphones, potentially providing a more appealing option for consumers.
