Microsoft has scheduled an event on LinkedIn for September 16, titled “Microsoft 365 Copilot: Wave 2.” The event will be led by CEO Satya Nadella and Jared Spataro, Vice President of AI at Work. According to the brief description, the event will reveal the “next phase of Copilot innovation.” Industry expert Tom Warren from The Verge anticipates that the focus will be on business applications rather than consumer products. The title also suggests that Copilot will be rebranded to “Microsoft 365 Copilot”—a minor shift aimed at integrating the product into Microsoft 365 subscriptions and encouraging businesses to view Copilot as an essential tool.
In addition to the new name, Warren predicts that several new features for the $30-per-user-per-month Copilot tier will be announced. This tier provides employees access to Copilot within Microsoft 365 apps and Teams, featuring priority model access and enhanced data protection. However, many organizations remain cautious about the high cost. With no indication of a price reduction, Microsoft may be looking to enhance the service's value through additional features.
While the primary emphasis will be on the business-oriented subscription, there may also be updates for the consumer-focused Copilot Pro subscription. Currently, Copilot Pro offers similar core functionalities to the $30 tier but excludes Teams and lost its customization feature, Copilot GPT Builder, in June. The main objective of Copilot tools is to streamline tasks such as drafting emails, converting Word documents to PowerPoint presentations, and summarizing meetings. The key to success lies in delivering quick and accurate results for these everyday tasks; thus, any new features must be polished and user-ready to justify the subscription costs effectively. The event will commence at 8 a.m. PT/11 a.m. ET on September 16, and we’ll provide all the key highlights as they unfold.
