Microsoft has announced a $3 billion initiative to expand its cloud computing and AI capabilities in India, marking its largest investment in the country. The funds will be allocated over the next two years, with a focus on building new data centers to support the rapid growth of India's digital economy.
CEO Satya Nadella highlighted that this investment is aimed at fostering AI innovation in India and aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for comprehensive development by 2047. As part of this effort, Microsoft plans to train 10 million Indians in AI skills over the next five years through the ADVANTA(I)GE India program.
Nadella pointed out that India's conducive policy environment, advanced digital infrastructure like the 'India Stack', entrepreneurial drive, and favorable demographics have created a positive cycle, encouraging Microsoft to invest more in next-generation AI computing power. The company has already established partnerships with several Indian enterprises, such as Infosys and Air India, using its technology to drive progress across various sectors.
To support this growth, Microsoft will enhance its cloud and AI infrastructure, with the fourth data center expected to be operational by 2026. Additionally, Microsoft has exceeded its previous AI training goal, having educated 2.4 million individuals ahead of schedule, and will continue to collaborate with government agencies, nonprofits, and businesses to promote AI education.
The Microsoft Research Lab (MSR Lab) has launched an AI Innovation Network to strengthen the AI ecosystem in India and is working with edtech firm Physics Wallah to improve math reasoning tools. Furthermore, Microsoft has partnered with SaaSBoomi, a community for B2B startups, aiming to support 5,000 startups and 10,000 entrepreneurs, upskill over 150,000 startup employees, create 200,000 new job opportunities, and attract an additional $1.5 billion in venture capital for India's AI and SaaS sector over the next five years.
This investment underscores Microsoft's confidence in the Indian market and its commitment to positioning India as a global leader in AI.
