Microsoft to Spend $80 Billion on AI Data Centers

Microsoft announced in a blog post that it plans to dedicate $80 billion in its 2025 fiscal year to build data centers specifically designed to handle AI workloads.

These data centers will focus on training AI models and deploying AI and cloud-based applications worldwide. Brad Smith, Microsoft's Vice Chairman and President, stated that more than half of this funding will be used in the United States. Microsoft's 2025 fiscal year will end in June.

In the blog post, Smith wrote, "Looking ahead, artificial intelligence will clearly become a major force for change in the world. AI has the potential to drive innovation and increase productivity across industries." He added, "The U.S. has the opportunity to be at the forefront of this new technological wave, especially if it can leverage its strengths and increase international cooperation."

Reports say that in April, Microsoft and OpenAI negotiated the creation of a data center equipped with an AI supercomputer known as "Star Gate," which is expected to cost over $100 billion to build. It’s worth noting that later this year, Microsoft referred to OpenAI as a "competitor" in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Personal Insight: Microsoft’s massive investment in AI technology shows both its forward-thinking approach and the growing importance of AI in the future economy. As more companies pour resources into AI research and infrastructure, we are likely to witness a global tech race. This competition is not only about the technology itself but also about how these technologies can be used to drive societal progress and improve productivity. Particularly in the U.S., Microsoft’s support for AI indicates that it will be a key factor in enhancing national competitiveness.
