Nvidia has completed its acquisition of Run:ai, a software company specializing in orchestrating GPU clouds for artificial intelligence, and announced plans to open source the platform. The purchase price was reportedly $700 million. Run:ai's software schedules Nvidia GPU resources into the cloud for AI, and the decision to open-source it may be a strategic move to avoid antitrust scrutiny as Nvidia has become the world's most valuable company, with its stock price soaring.
Nvidia, a leading maker of AI chips, did not elaborate on the reasoning behind open-sourcing Run:ai, but it could be similar to Microsoft's strategy of licensing Activision's Call of Duty games to other platforms in order to appease antitrust regulators after its $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
Run:ai founders Omri Geller and Ronen Dar said the open source software will help the community build better AI faster and extend it to the entire AI ecosystem, not just Nvidia GPUs.They emphasized their commitment to continuing to support their customers and provide GPU systems with maximum flexibility, efficiency and utilization, whether on-premise, in the cloud via native solutions or on the Nvidia DGX Cloud.
Founded in 2018, Run:ai aims to be a driving force in the AI revolution and empower organizations to unlock the full potential of their AI infrastructure. The company has achieved significant milestones, including building innovative technologies, amazing products and a powerful go-to-market engine.
As part of Nvidia, Run:ai will continue to empower AI teams with the freedom to choose the tools, platforms and frameworks that best fit their needs, strengthening partnerships and working side-by-side with the ecosystem to deliver a wide range of AI solutions and platform options. The acquisition is designed to provide customers with maximum choice, efficiency and flexibility in GPU orchestration software, as Nvidia emphasizes both hardware and software.
In 2018, TLV Partners led a seed round of funding for Run:ai, and managing director Rona Segev noted that the AI market has changed significantly since then.Segev recalled that Omri and Ronen came up with the idea of creating an orchestration layer between AI models and GPUs to address the issue of training an Segev praised the founders' combination of intelligence, charisma, insanity, and humility as the perfect mix of the type of founders TLV Partners wants to support.
