In a surprising shakeup at OpenAI, the company's board of directors announced the immediate firing of CEO Sam Altman. Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati will step in as interim CEO. This decision reportedly followed a thorough internal review that indicated Altman had not been fully transparent with the board, undermining its ability to fulfill its responsibilities. Consequently, the board expressed a lack of confidence in Altman's leadership.
OpenAI, the creator of the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, acknowledged Altman's significant contributions to the company but believes Murati is exceptionally qualified to lead during this transition period. The board comprises Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever, Chairman Greg Brockman, and independent advisors, including Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo and privacy advocate Helen Toner.
Altman's profile has surged alongside the rapid growth of generative AI over the past year, making him a prominent figure in the industry. His background includes serving as president of Y Combinator, where he played a key role in scaling startups and engaging with government committees on AI-related topics.
The timing of the announcement is especially striking, given Altman's recent high-profile appearances, including the OpenAI 2023 DevDay where he unveiled the new GPT-4 Turbo platform. At the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation CEO Summit, he enthusiastically described AI's advancements, stating, “Something has qualitatively changed… Now I can talk to this thing,” emphasizing the transformative potential of the technology.
This leadership change also impacts Brockman, who in response to the news announced his resignation as board president in a message to OpenAI employees.
Following Altman's departure, Microsoft—which shares a significant partnership with OpenAI—experienced a dip in market trading. Despite this, Microsoft remains committed to its collaboration with OpenAI. A spokesperson reaffirmed the company's long-term commitment to Murati and the team as they advance AI technologies.
Altman co-founded OpenAI with Elon Musk in 2015, initially as a nonprofit organization, and transitioned to leading the for-profit arm in 2019. The launch of ChatGPT last November is credited with igniting the generative AI boom, offering users an innovative conversational experience that surpasses earlier digital assistants. This technology has since evolved, enabling multilingual communication and advanced programming capabilities.
