OpenAI is planning to introduce a subscription fee for ChatGPT, reportedly charging $22 per month by the end of the year. The company anticipates a significant price increase over the next five years, potentially raising the monthly cost to $44.
According to documents obtained by The New York Times, OpenAI generated $300 million in revenue this August and projects total sales of $3.7 billion by year-end. However, due to substantial expenses, including salaries, rent, and operational costs, the company expects to incur a $5 billion loss this year.
To address its financial shortfall, OpenAI is sharing these documents as part of an effort to attract new investors. Currently valued at $150 billion, the company aims to raise as much as $7 billion in its latest funding round.
Additionally, OpenAI is transitioning from a non-profit to a for-profit model, allowing for the removal of caps on investor returns. This shift may create more flexibility in negotiations with potential investors, potentially leading to higher rates of return.
