OpenAI Introduces ChatGPT Plans Tailored for Enterprise Customers

In a bid to leverage the viral success of ChatGPT, OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Enterprise, a tailored version of its AI-driven chatbot application designed for businesses. This new offering, first hinted at in an earlier blog post, retains ChatGPT’s core functionalities—such as drafting emails, creating essays, and debugging code—while adding enhanced "enterprise-grade" privacy features, data analysis tools, and robust customization options.

ChatGPT Enterprise stands out in the market, aligning closely with Microsoft’s Bing Chat Enterprise in terms of features and capabilities. “Today represents a significant step toward creating an AI assistant for the workplace, one that can handle diverse tasks while safeguarding company data and adapting to your organization’s needs,” OpenAI stated in a recent blog post. Organizations interested in adopting ChatGPT Enterprise are encouraged to reach out, although OpenAI has not yet disclosed specific pricing, as it will vary based on each company’s usage and needs.

The new ChatGPT Enterprise includes a comprehensive admin console that provides tools for managing employee interactions with the platform. Key features include single sign-on integration, domain verification, and a usage statistics dashboard. Furthermore, shareable conversation templates facilitate the development of internal workflows, while credits for OpenAI’s API enable organizations to craft their own customized ChatGPT solutions.

Additionally, ChatGPT Enterprise offers unlimited access to Advanced Data Analysis, the feature previously known as Code Interpreter. This capability allows ChatGPT to analyze data sets, generate visual insights, solve mathematical problems, and more—all from uploaded files. For example, a prompt like “What insights can you extract from this data?” lets ChatGPT’s Advanced Data Analysis function sift through various information types—such as financial or health data—to produce valuable insights.

Advanced Data Analysis was exclusive to ChatGPT Plus subscribers, the premium tier of OpenAI’s consumer offerings at $20 per month. Importantly, ChatGPT Plus will still be available, as OpenAI sees ChatGPT Enterprise as a complementary service.

ChatGPT Enterprise operates on OpenAI’s flagship AI model, GPT-4, which is also the backbone of ChatGPT Plus. However, subscribers to ChatGPT Enterprise receive prioritized access to GPT-4, resulting in performance that is twice as fast as the standard version and accommodating a context window of 32,000 tokens (approximately 25,000 words). This extended context window enhances the model's ability to maintain continuity in dialogues by reducing the likelihood of forgetting recent exchanges.

In light of security concerns, OpenAI assures businesses that it will not train its models on data submitted by ChatGPT Enterprise users or any usage data collected. All conversations are encrypted both in transit and at rest.

OpenAI expresses its belief that AI has the potential to enhance every aspect of professional life, fostering both creativity and productivity. The company reports significant interest from businesses in adopting ChatGPT Enterprise, noting that ChatGPT has been embraced by teams across more than 80% of Fortune 500 companies.

However, questions remain about the long-term sustainability of ChatGPT. Analytics firm Similarweb indicates that global traffic for ChatGPT saw a drop of 9.7% from May to June, with average interaction time on the web app falling by 8.5%. This decline might be attributed to factors such as the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT app for mobile devices and the seasonal impact of summer vacation. Increased competition could also be a contributing factor.

OpenAI faces mounting pressure to monetize this tool, having reportedly invested over $540 million last year in the development of ChatGPT, including recruiting talent from major tech firms like Google. Current estimates suggest the operation of ChatGPT costs OpenAI roughly $700,000 daily, while the company generated only $30 million in revenue for the fiscal year 2022.

CEO Sam Altman has reportedly informed investors of ambitious plans to increase revenue to $200 million this year and $1 billion next year, with ChatGPT Enterprise presumably central to those strategies.

Looking ahead, OpenAI has indicated future enhancements for ChatGPT Enterprise, which may include a ChatGPT Business option designed for smaller teams, connections to other applications, more powerful versions of Advanced Data Analysis and web browsing, and tools specifically tailored for data analysts, marketers, and customer support teams. “We anticipate sharing a comprehensive roadmap with potential customers and evolving ChatGPT Enterprise based on your feedback,” OpenAI concluded.
