Yahoo is launching new AI tools for Yahoo Mail, designed to help users save both time and money, the company announced on Monday. This rollout features enhancements to various existing AI functions and introduces a new Shopping Saver tool.
The Shopping Saver tool identifies overlooked gift cards, discount codes, and store credits that users may have forgotten. Additionally, it generates suggested messages for users to send to vendors, facilitating the application of these savings after a purchase. Yahoo highlights that nearly half of U.S. adults possess at least one unused gift card or store credit. This innovative tool aims to maximize savings for online shoppers.
“We’ve introduced a comprehensive suite of tools in Yahoo Mail to assist users in saving time and money, moving closer to an assistive inbox experience,” said Josh Jacobson, senior vice president and general manager of Yahoo Mail. “U.S. consumers are sitting on $23 billion in unused gift cards and credits. We hope our new tools will help users reclaim some of that value.”
The updates also enhance Yahoo Mail’s current capabilities, particularly its search and writing assistant features. The search bar has been improved to suggest common questions, allowing users to find information more efficiently. Rather than relying solely on keywords, users can simply ask questions or choose from a list of relevant prompts. New filters (e.g., From, To, Date) further streamline search results.
In addition, the writing assistant has expanded its functionality. Previously capable of drafting replies only in casual or professional tones, users can now select from more options, including urgent, grateful, or apologetic tones.
Yahoo developed these generative AI features utilizing Google Cloud’s AI platform. Initially tested with iOS users, these tools are now being made available to web browser users. Although a public release is forthcoming, Yahoo has not yet announced a specific date for the wider launch.
As competitors like Google and Microsoft have rolled out their own generative AI enhancements to Gmail and Outlook over the past year, Yahoo aims to keep pace in the evolving landscape of email technology.
