OpenAI has introduced a new feature in ChatGPT that enhances user experience without launching a major update like GPT-5. In response to the competitive landscape dominated by rival Anthropic's recent large language model (LLM), OpenAI has rolled out “Read Aloud,” a voiceover narration feature for its chatbot.
Available on ChatGPT’s mobile apps for iOS and Android, users can activate this feature by holding down on a response and selecting the “Read Aloud” option from the pop-up menu. For those using ChatGPT on the web, this feature can be accessed by clicking the microphone icon below the chatbot's output.
According to an OpenAI spokesperson, the Read Aloud feature is designed for convenience, allowing users to engage with the chatbot while on the go, in hands-free situations, or when auditory comprehension is beneficial.
As OpenAI releases this update, it faces increasing competition from other tech giants. The company is also navigating a legal challenge from Elon Musk and competing against powerful LLMs from Anthropic and Google. While Google’s Gemini has faced criticism for its response guardrails and image generation issues, OpenAI continues to innovate and improve its offerings.
