OpenAI Launches DALL-E 3: Artists Can Now Choose to Opt Out of Training Data Usage

OpenAI has announced an enhanced version of its text-to-image tool, DALL-E, integrating ChatGPT—the company's popular AI chatbot—to simplify the process of crafting prompts.

Modern AI-driven image generation tools transform text prompts—descriptions of desired images—into artwork across a spectrum of styles, from photorealistic to surreal. However, creating effective prompts can be challenging, leading to the rise of “prompt engineering” as a recognized profession.

The latest iteration, DALL-E 3, leverages ChatGPT to assist users in developing prompts. Subscribers to OpenAI's premium plans, including ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Enterprise, Bing Chat, and Bing Chat Enterprise, can enter image requests and refine them through interactive conversations with ChatGPT, receiving the generated artwork directly within the chat interface.

ChatGPT can take a simple prompt and enhance it with additional details, providing clearer guidance for the DALL-E 3 model. Alongside this integration, DALL-E 3 boasts improvements in image quality, accurately reflecting more complex prompts, especially longer ones. It also better addresses common pitfalls in image generation, such as rendering textual content and human hands.

Beyond these features, DALL-E 3 introduces new strategies to mitigate algorithmic bias and enhance user safety, according to OpenAI. For instance, the tool will decline requests for images mimicking the style of living artists or featuring recognizably public figures. Furthermore, artists now have the option to exclude their work from being utilized in training future versions of OpenAI’s text-to-image models. This comes amid ongoing legal challenges faced by OpenAI and other competitors over the use of copyrighted artworks for training generative AI systems.

As the market for generative AI intensifies, particularly in image creation, rivals like Midjourney and Stability AI are continually advancing their own models, raising the bar for OpenAI.

DALL-E 3 is set to launch for premium ChatGPT subscribers in October, with plans to extend access to research institutions and API customers thereafter. OpenAI has not yet indicated whether it will release a free web-based version, similar to past iterations of DALL-E.
