OpenAI Partners with Reddit to Integrate Reddit Posts into ChatGPT

OpenAI Partners with Reddit to Enhance AI and Content Discovery

On Thursday, OpenAI and Reddit announced a partnership aimed at integrating Reddit discussions into ChatGPT while introducing AI-powered features for Reddit users. According to a joint statement, this collaboration will help OpenAI's tools better understand and highlight Reddit content, particularly around current topics.

As part of the agreement, OpenAI will also serve as an advertising partner on Reddit, allowing it to run ads on the platform. This deal mirrors a similar arrangement Reddit made with Google in February, reportedly valued at $60 million. Reddit declined to comment on the specific terms of the OpenAI partnership, and OpenAI has not responded to requests for clarification.

OpenAI has been actively forming alliances with various publishers to gather data for training its AI models. Recently, the company has entered agreements with the Financial Times and Dotdash Meredith. Last year, a partnership with German publisher Axel Springer allowed OpenAI to utilize news content from Politico and Business Insider in the US, as well as Bild and Die Welt in Germany.

Under the new collaboration, OpenAI will gain access to Reddit’s Data API, providing “real-time, structured, and unique content from Reddit.” However, details on the specific AI-powered features Reddit plans to implement remain unclear, and a Reddit spokesperson declined to comment on this.

Access to Reddit’s data became a contentious issue last year when the company announced it would charge developers for API usage, leading to the shutdown of numerous third-party Reddit clients and protests from thousands of subreddits. Reddit maintained that large AI firms were utilizing its data without compensation. Since then, the platform has begun monetizing its data through partnerships with companies like Google and OpenAI, which rely on such data for training their AI models.
