OpenAI Reveals Iran's Attempts to Manipulate US Elections Using ChatGPT

OpenAI has banned several ChatGPT accounts associated with an Iranian influence campaign that created and disseminated content related to the U.S. presidential election and other significant topics. This operation primarily utilized ChatGPT to generate long-form articles and social media comments for platforms like Instagram and X.

OpenAI linked these accounts to Storm-2035, a covert Iranian initiative aimed at engaging U.S. voters by launching websites that masquerade as political news outlets. In addition to commentary about the U.S. election, the operation produced content on various subjects, including the Israel-Hamas war, Israel's participation in the Olympics, Venezuelan politics, and the rights of Latinx communities in the U.S.

OpenAI's investigation revealed that the campaign had minimal impact, with most tracked social media posts receiving few or no interactions. In May, OpenAI and Meta collaborated to disrupt a social media campaign that employed AI to post pro-Israel messages on Instagram and Facebook.

As the U.S. presidential election approaches, there may be increased attempts to influence its outcome. Recently, former President Donald Trump reported that his campaign had been hacked, linking the incident to a phishing email from an Iranian hacking group. In response, the FBI has initiated an investigation into the alleged hacking of both Trump's and the Biden-Harris campaigns.
