Over 80% of Companies Adopting Generative AI by 2026: A 16-Fold Increase from Today—Gartner Insights

Gartner recently released a report projecting that by 2026, over 80% of enterprises will utilize generative AI applications, APIs, or models within their production environments. Currently, fewer than 5% of companies have deployed generative AI in production, but this number is expected to surge 16-fold within just three years. Arun Chandrasekaran, Gartner's distinguished vice president and analyst, views generative AI as a "top priority" for business leaders, highlighting its potential to drive significant innovation beyond foundational models. Demand for generative AI is anticipated to rise across various sectors, including healthcare, life sciences, legal, financial services, and the public sector.

Gartner believes that generative AI can enhance user experiences and improve task efficiency. As applications increasingly incorporate AI functionalities, industry professionals must familiarize themselves with these emerging technologies. However, Chandrasekaran cautions that while the most common usage of generative AI involves "creating something from text," challenges remain, such as "hallucinations and inaccuracies," which may hinder widespread adoption.

Furthermore, Gartner forecasts that foundational models will reach the "peak stage" of the technology maturity curve, predicting that by 2027, these models will underpin 60% of natural language processing (NLP) use cases, a significant increase from less than 5% in 2021.
