Bot Creators Can Now Monetize Their Chatbots on Poe

Quora's AI chatbot platform, Poe, has unveiled an innovative way for bot creators to earn money. As of Monday, the platform now allows creators to set a per-message price for their chatbots, enabling them to earn revenue each time a user sends a message. This new feature follows the introduction of a revenue-sharing initiative in October 2023, which allows bot creators to earn a portion of revenue when users subscribe to Poe's premium offerings.

Launched in February 2023, Poe provides users with the chance to explore various AI chatbots developed by industry leaders like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. The platform aims to simplify access to advanced AI technologies while creating opportunities for Quora to generate fresh content.

Poe’s revenue models present a fresh perspective on the creator economy, incentivizing AI enthusiasts who design "prompt bots" alongside developers who create server bots that connect with Poe’s AI. Nearly five months after announcing plans for this monetization strategy, Quora is finally rolling out the ability for creators to charge per message.

During a discussion on Monday, Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo shared that Poe users will earn message points for each bot interaction, which align with their status as either free users or Poe subscribers. However, creators will receive their earnings in cash. He stated, “This pricing mechanism is crucial for developers incurring significant model inference or API costs. Our aim is to foster a vibrant ecosystem of model developers and bot creators who build on existing models, and addressing these operational costs is essential.”

D’Angelo envisions that this new revenue model will encourage the creation of innovative bots across various fields, including tutoring, information assistance, analysis, storytelling, and image generation.

Currently, the per-message pricing feature is available exclusively to U.S. bot creators, with plans for global expansion in the future. This initiative complements the creator monetization program, which offers payments of up to $20 for each user who subscribes to Poe through a creator's bots.

In addition to the per-message revenue option, Poe has introduced an upgraded analytics dashboard that provides creators with insights into their bot’s average earnings across paywalls, subscriptions, and messages. This daily-updated data will enable creators to assess the impact of their pricing strategies on bot performance and revenue generation.

With these new features, Quora’s Poe is building a dynamic AI chatbot creator economy, empowering developers and engaging users in exciting ways.
