Reddit Launches AI-Powered Automatic Translation in Many New Countries

Reddit is expanding its machine learning-powered translation services to over 35 new locations across Europe, Asia, and Latin America. This initiative aims to make the predominantly English-language social network more accessible to a broader audience.

This announcement comes nearly five months after Reddit initially launched site-wide translations for French users. Previously, the platform allowed users to translate individual posts into multiple languages. Reddit also enables users to select their preferred language for content recommendations and adjust the display language, which translates the interface itself.

This update follows Reddit's public offering seven months ago. The company reports steady growth in its user base and advertising revenue, but expanding its language offerings remains a crucial strategy for attracting new users.

The standout feature of Reddit’s new translation system is its ability to automatically translate both posts and comments from the original community language to the user's chosen language. This means conversations within a subreddit can seamlessly flow between different languages, eliminating the need for manual translations. Users can communicate in any supported language, and Reddit will automatically translate it into the community's default language.

For those in supported regions, a new “translate” icon will appear in the menu, allowing easy viewing of content in the user’s preferred language. Translated posts will be labeled accordingly, and users can opt to view the original language if desired.

As with the French translations rolled out earlier, Reddit ensures that the content will be indexed in the supported languages for search engines. This means that users searching for information in their own language will find relevant results from Reddit.

While Reddit hasn't disclosed the complete list of new supported languages, the translation service is currently live in Brazil and Spain, confirming support for Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish in those regions. The platform plans to expand AI-driven translations to Germany, Italy, the Philippines, and several Latin American markets in the coming weeks.
