RenderATL: Bridging Tech and Diversity in Atlanta
RenderATL is a unique tech conference that champions diversity in technology, far removed from the conventional scene in Silicon Valley. Held in Atlanta, it aims to include a wider range of engineers and technologists in the community.
Founded in 2019 by Justin Samuels, CEO of RenderATL, the event has generated over $6.5 million in economic impact for Atlanta. This year, it expects more than 5,000 attendees from June 12 to June 14 at America’s Mart during Atlanta Tech Week.
In an interview, Samuels emphasizes, “Render isn’t your typical company; it’s designed by tech professionals for tech professionals.” The conference creates a space where the local culture and technology blend seamlessly, allowing attendees to be their authentic selves rather than just checking off a box.
The tech industry remains largely homogenous; globally, men comprise about 92% of software developers. In the U.S., women represent roughly 22% of software engineers, while Black engineers account for under 5%, and Hispanic/LatinX professionals make up 6.9%, according to a 2022 report.
The event features over 70 partners and 100+ keynote addresses, seminars, and workshops. Notable speakers this year include NFL legend Shannon Sharpe, distinguished Google engineer Kelsey Hightower, and entertainer DJ Pee .Wee (Anderson .Paak).
Samuels aims to bring a diverse audience into the tech realm to influence its future. RenderATL will showcase discussions on artificial intelligence, software engineering, tech leadership, and more, giving attendees opportunities to enhance their skills and connect with potential employers in a dynamic environment.
RenderATL is committed to merging tech with culture, providing attendees with empowering discussions and live performances from top musical acts, creating an unparalleled networking experience across various industries.
Origins
The diverse crowd captures the essence of RenderATL. Samuels, the child of immigrants, reflects on his technological journey that began when his father gifted him a computer. His interest in tech grew as he explored Geocities and MySpace, leading him into the software engineering field.
“During my travels across the country for continuing education, I wondered why such events couldn't happen on the East Coast, especially in a vibrant city like Atlanta,” he shares. His vision was to create an inclusive platform that would not only offer professional development but also celebrate cultural elements often missing from tech conferences.
Despite the pandemic, Samuels organized a small event in September 2021, attracting 350 attendees and 20 corporate partners. The event continued to grow, drawing 1,200 participants in June 2022 and 3,000 in June 2023.
The 2024 Event
RenderATL is set to host 5,000 attendees in June 2024, featuring keynote speaker Shannon Sharpe, who will discuss organizational leadership in a session moderated by Revolt Media's CEO, Detavio Samuels. With its focus on artificial intelligence, RenderATL is uniquely positioned to impact the future of tech.
Samuels highlights that over 40% of attendees identify as having African descent, with about half identifying as women, marking a significant achievement in a predominantly male industry. Other speakers include Kelsey Hightower and musical talents like DJ Pee .Wee and R&B artists Rotimi and D Smoke.
“This year represents a pivotal moment for the tech community,” Samuels states, noting RenderATL's dedication to continuous learning and advancement in technology.
Supported by Zillow and Atlanta’s mayor, RenderATL is integral to shaping Atlanta into a top tech hub. Donnie Beamer, senior technology advisor to the mayor, emphasizes the importance of initiatives like RenderATL in creating career opportunities and fostering community among aspiring technologists.
Samuels articulates his mission: “While we celebrate diversity, our primary goal is to be the premier technology conference for continuing education. Learning should be accessible and inclusive, allowing individuals from different backgrounds to thrive in a supportive environment.”
As chairman and founder of Atlanta Tech Week, Samuels aims to expand the reach of RenderATL, fostering interest from neighboring states and solidifying Atlanta’s reputation as a vibrant destination for tech innovation.
